Phase 22+ Implementation Track: Advanced Institutional Portfolio Analytics & Forecasting
This document outlines the architecture, integration specification, and testing strategy for transforming the portfolio monitor from a standard tracking dashboard into an institutional-grade, mathematically rigorous portfolio case study. By implementing these advanced models, you generate deep epistemic honesty—proving why the portfolio behaved the way it did, and how it is probabilistically expected to behave in the final 29 days.
Architectural Integration & Testing Principles
- Tight Repository Integration: All new analytics must seamlessly extend the existing engines (
quant_monitor/backtest/engine.py,quant_monitor/models/). New metrics should be injected natively viametrics.pywithout breaking existing tracking pipelines. - Test-Driven Architecture: Advanced metric engines are fragile and mathematically complex. All models (Fama-French regressions, Sortino, VaR, Monte Carlo) will be verified in
tests/using the precise March 13 Checkpoint Data. - Data Forwarding: Data ingested for factor models or regressions must utilize the existing caches (
quant_monitor/data/cache.py) to prevent overloading public APIs.
The March 16, 2026 Portfolio Checkpoint
All analytical engines and tests will initialize with the following validated portfolio state. Note: Includes new tactical purchases (IBB, ORCL, SIEGY) and active sizes.
Positions & Share Counts: - AMZN: 250 - GOOGL: 130 - IBB: 120 - IONQ: 800 - ITA: 100 - JNJ: 260 - LMT: 120 - MU: 15 - NBIS: 135 - NVDA: 274 - ORCL: 161 - PG: 235 - PLTR: 388 - SIEGY: 150 - SPY: 295 - TGT: 610 - TSM: 230 - XLE: 60 - XLP: 440 - XLU: 800 - XOM: 75 - Cash: ~$43,574 (~4.36%)
Phase 22: Advanced Risk & Downside Metrics Expansion
Goal: Move beyond standard-deviation metrics to capture true tail risk, asymmetry, and regime-specific volatility.
- Implementations (quant_monitor/backtest/metrics.py)
- Sortino & Kappa Ratios: Differentiate harmful downside volatility from upside volatility.
- Cornish-Fisher VaR & Conditional VaR (Expected Shortfall): Escapes Gaussian (normal) assumptions by incorporating the portfolio's empirical Skewness and Kurtosis (fat tails).
- Tail Ratio & Drawdown Duration: The ratio of the 95th percentile returns vs the 5th percentile, alongside maximum contiguous days underwater.
- Testing (tests/test_metrics.py): Assert against pre-calculated edge cases (e.g., negative fat-tailed returns must yield correctly adjusted Cornish-Fisher VaR). Test data will be pulled from tests/test_data/TransactionHistory_2026-03-13.csv.
Phase 23: Factor Models & Regression Engine
Goal: Quantify the hidden bets the portfolio is making. Separate true management skill (Alpha) from systematic risk exposure (Beta).
- Implementations (quant_monitor/models/factor.py)
- Fama-French 3-Factor Regression: MKT (Market), SMB (Size factor), HML (Value factor).
- Carhart 4-Factor Model: Adds MOM (Momentum premium).
- q-Factor Model (Hou-Xue-Zhang): Incorporates Investment and Profitability constraints.
- Integration: Hook into quant_monitor/data/sources/ to automatically fetch / proxy factor returns using ETF analogs (SPY for MKT, IWM for SMB, IWD for HML) or Ken French data libraries.
- Testing (tests/test_models/test_factor.py): Compare the calculated portfolio betas on the Checkpoint data against standard benchmark references to ensure OLS regressions execute correctly.
Phase 24: Performance Attribution (Brinson-Fachler)
Goal: Decompose the exact mathematical sources of the portfolio's return against a chosen benchmark.
- Implementations (quant_monitor/backtest/attribution.py)
- Allocation Effect: Did the portfolio suffer because it was overweight in Technology while technology dropped? (Sector-level weighting impact).
- Selection Effect: Did the portfolio suffer because it picked the wrong specific Tech stocks, despite Technology going up?
- Interaction Effect: The combined impact of timing the allocation and the selection simultaneously.
- Integration: This plugs directly into the WalkForwardEngine to auto-generate attribution tables alongside standard P&L reports.
Phase 25: Machine Learning & Modern Metrics (Overfitting Prevention)
Goal: Mathematically prove that the backtested strategy or chosen tactical swaps aren't just curve-fitted illusions.
- Implementations (quant_monitor/backtest/modern_metrics.py)
- Probabilistic Sharpe Ratio (PSR): Adjusts Sharpe for non-normal distributions (skewness/kurtosis). Provides a probability measurement (e.g., "95% probability true Sharpe > 0").
- Deflated Sharpe Ratio (DSR): Penalizes PSR based on the number of strategy variations tested to account for selection bias.
- Probability of Backtest Overfitting (PBO): Utilize Combinatorially Symmetric Cross-Validation (CSCV).
- Integration: Calculate asynchronously or end-of-run during model evaluations in optimizer.py.
Phase 26: Monte Carlo Forward Simulation (The 29-Day Oracle)
Goal: Forecast the final 29 days dynamically using stochastic calculus, outputting probability distributions rather than singular deterministic hopes.
- Implementations (quant_monitor/backtest/simulation.py)
- Empirical Modeling: Extract the empirical covariance matrix and moving volatility from the actual historical behavior of the 18 validated checkpoint positions.
- Stochastic Sampling: Run 10,000 parallel simulations of the next 29 trading days using Geometric Brownian Motion + Jump Diffusion.
- Cholesky Decomposition: Ensure exact cross-asset correlations are maintained across the thousands of parallel universes.
- Output (quant_monitor/dashboard/openbb_views.py): Display interactive Probability density functions (PDF/CDF), highlighting exactly where the +3% hurdle lies on the statistical bell curve.
Phase 27: Historical Stress Testing & Scenario Analysis
Goal: Answer the question: "What happens to our current exact portfolio if the market undergoes a profound exogenous shock tomorrow?"
- Implementations (quant_monitor/backtest/stress.py)
- Historical Replay Models: Inject the March 13 Checkpoint portfolio into historical data streams like the 2008 Financial Crisis, 2020 COVID Flash Crash, and the 2022 Inflation Pivot.
- Regime-Switching Simulation: Test if the multi-model architecture's "Crisis" weights trigger fast enough to protect against the drawdown.
- Integration: Plugs into the engine.py using historical data snapshots retrieved through the established yfinance/FRED pipelines.
Phase 28: Advanced Capital Allocation (Risk Parity & Kelly Criterion)
Goal: Mathematically justify any final tactical changes with the remaining 19.1% ($67,000) cash balance based on optimal bet sizing.
- Implementations (quant_monitor/agent/optimizer.py evolution)
- Risk Parity Constraints: Rebalance the weighting logic to map position sizes inversely to their volatility (equalizing risk contribution, not capital contribution).
- Fractional Kelly Sizing: Given the forward win/loss probabilities computed in Phase 26 (Monte Carlo), calculate the exact Kelly fraction to deploy the remaining cash without triggering ruin.
- Integration: Updates the Black-Litterman output loop in optimizer.py to bound final tactical swaps.
Phase 29: Aesthetic Direction & Narrative Coherence
Goal: Commit to a bold, memorable visual direction before writing frontend code. Every interface must feel designed, intentional, and narrative-driven. - Implementations: - Define the core tone (e.g., editorial brutalism, luxury minimalism, or maximalist). - Identify the "Signature Element"—the one unforgettable detail that defines the interface. - Blueprint spatial composition maps that actively break predictable grids (e.g., avoiding generic hero layouts, using negative space and layers). - Integration: Initial wireframing and CSS architectural scaffolds.
Phase 30: Typography, Color & Textural Atmosphere
Goal: Eradicate generic AI UI "slop." Instantiate a distinctive, characterful foundation of fonts, colors, and backgrounds.
- Implementations:
- Typography: Pair a strong display face with a refined body face. Strictly ban overused defaults like Inter, Roboto, or Arial.
- Color: Commit to a palette with a definitive point of view using CSS variables. Prefer bold contrasts over timid, flat defaults.
- Atmosphere: Build depth using gradient meshes, noise, organic textures, shadows, or grain to escape sterile white-background SaaS themes.
- Integration: Core design tokens merged into the web frontend (frontend/styles/).
Phase 31: Advanced Motion & Meaningful Interactions
Goal: Match the ambition of the aesthetic with complex, layered motion. Focus on sequenced, meaningful engagement. - Implementations: - Implement sequenced reveals and scroll-triggered moments mapping to user journey steps. - Construct stateful hover interactions that feel precise and tactile. - Utilize pure CSS for simple physical builds, deferring to robust motion libraries (e.g., Framer Motion) for complex nested sequences. - Integration: Motion systems injected into the main frontend components.
Phase 32: Manim Mathematical Rendering Engine
Goal: Visually prove the institutional math (Phase 26 + Phase 24) using procedural, high-fidelity animations.
- Implementations (scripts/render_manim.py & archived docs/archive/manim/ sources):
- Use the Manim engine to procedurally animate the generation of the 10,000 Monte Carlo stochastic paths and regime-shifting correlation networks.
- Render complex mathematical outputs into WebM/MP4 video assets designed to loop seamlessly within the newly established aesthetic UI.
- Integration: Python-based mathematical rendering piped directly into the static web directory.
Phase 33: Stateful Frontend Engineering & Data Binding
Goal: Assemble the final production-ready frontend framework respecting layout ambition and code constraints.
- Implementations (frontend/):
- Scaffold a functional HTML/CSS/JS framework respecting accessibility and responsiveness.
- Ensure the layout exactly respects the spatial composition rules (asymmetry, controlled density) mapped in Phase 29, acting as a true designer-engineer hybrid output.
- Integration: Wire the bespoke frontend components to locally processed data preparing for live telemetry.
Phase 34: Institutional Tear Sheet Pipeline (PDF Generation)
Goal: Programmatically capture this bespoke digital aesthetic into an immutable PDF for academic/institutional review.
- Implementations (scripts/generate_tearsheet.py):
- Use QuantStats and PyFPDF (layered with custom typography/styling from Phase 30) to replicate the digital UI's narrative on a static 2-to-3 page PDF.
- Output max drawdown charts, rolling Sharpe ratios, regime transition heatmaps, and Brinson attribution tables styled identically to an AQR or BlackRock fund report.
- Integration: A dedicated build script running after data processing to output the final deliverable files before any live presentation.
Phase 35: Public Live Telemetry
Goal: Make the highly aesthetic frontend live in the upcoming days so the public and the professor can see the telemetry run live, rather than waiting for the sunset. - Implementations: - Connect the bespoke Phase 33 UI directly via a web server/CDN routing to the backend Appwrite instance. - Stream live regime classifications, active signals, confidence scores, and real-time Monte Carlo forecast updates to the dashboard. - Integration: Heroku web dyno deployment or Vercel edge functions handling WebSockets/Polling from the backend data lake.
(Note: The final Project Sunset and Data Freeze has been moved to its own dedicated file: phase-finale-endgame.md)
